The Experience

Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) Las Vegas is North America’s largest electronic music festival, held annually at Las Vegas Motor Speedway since 2011. Known for 24/7 carnival rides, elaborate stage production, sunrise sets, and the Insomniac Events motto “All Are Welcome Here.”

Relocation & Rise (2011)

After a 2010 drug-related death at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, EDC relocated to Las Vegas and transformed into a 3-day sunset-to-sunrise festival (7 PM - 5:30 AM). The move coincided with EDM’s mainstream explosion, and attendance grew from 230,000 (2011) to 400,000+ (2019).

Stage Culture

  • kineticFIELD: Main Stage with cathedral-like structures (2014 Temple, 2016 Parliament of Tomorrow, 2019 kineticENERGY pyramid)
  • circuitGROUNDS: Techno/house temple (Solomun, Adam Beyer, Richie Hawtin)
  • bassPOD: Dubstep/bass music haven (Excision, Subtronics, Rezz)
  • neonGARDEN: Underground house/techno (Carl Cox, Jamie Jones, Green Velvet)
  • cosmicMEADOW: Trance stage (Armin, Above & Beyond, Aly & Filo)

Carnival Aesthetic

EDC pioneered the rave-meets-Disneyland experience: full-scale carnival rides (ferris wheel with LED lights, roller coasters, swings), art cars driving through crowds (mobile DJ booths), fireworks synchronized to drops, and roaming performers (stilt-walkers, LED hula-hoopers, fire dancers).

Cultural Moments

2012: Avicii Main Stage headline set (100,000+ attendees, “Levels” peak hype)
2014: Bassnectar circuitGROUNDS takeover (bass music legitimacy at festival scale)
2016: Seven Lions surprise B2B with Illenium (melodic bass movement birth)
2017: Marshmello brings out Selena Gomez for “Wolves” premiere
2019: Skrillex surprise Dog Blood set (first in 6 years)
2021: Post-COVID return (sold out 460,000 tickets in record time)

Festival Fashion

#EDCOutfit became cultural phenomenon: kandi bracelets (PLUR trading), pasties, tutus, LED accessories, rave bras, cosmic makeup. The “festival looks” Instagram subculture peaked 2014-2018.

Documentary

Under the Electric Sky (2014 Pasquale Rotella-produced film) captured the EDC experience through fan stories, legitimizing rave culture for mainstream audiences.
