Irish architect and furniture designer Eileen Gray (1878-1976). Pioneering modernist, underrated during lifetime, rediscovered posthumously. Designed iconic furniture (Bibendum Chair, E-1027 table) and revolutionary E-1027 villa.

Major Work: E-1027 Villa (1929)

Modernist masterpiece on French Riviera. Built for herself and lover Jean Badovici. Name: E (Eileen), 10 (J, 10th letter), 2 (B), 7 (G). Flat roof, ribbon windows, open plan, movable partitions, built-in furniture.

Le Corbusier obsession/vandalism: Corbusier (Badovici’s friend) visited E-1027, became obsessed. Painted murals on Gray’s pristine white walls WITHOUT permission (1938-39). Gray furious—felt violated, never returned. Corbusier built Cabanon next door (1952), died swimming there (1965). His murals overshadowed Gray’s authorship for decades.

Restoration: Near-ruin by 1990s. French state purchased 2000, restored 2015. Now museum, Cap Moderne site.

Furniture Design

Bibendum Chair (1926): Tubular steel frame, leather upholstery. Named after Michelin Man (resemblance to tire stacks). Modernist comfort.

E-1027 Adjustable Table (1927): Chrome-plated tubular steel, glass top. Designed to slide under bed for breakfast. ClassiCon still produces. MoMA permanent collection. Sold at auction $28M (2009, world record for 20th century furniture).

Dragon Chair (1917): Lacquered wood, Art Deco. Early career work, Asian influence.

Career Arc

1920s: Furniture designer, Paris gallery owner. Modernist pioneer alongside Le Corbusier, Mies, but excluded from their circle (woman, Irish, lesbian).

1930s-1940s: Architectural work (E-1027, Tempe à Pailla). World War II disrupted career.

1950s-1976: Obscurity. Corbusier’s fame eclipsed Gray. Feminist architecture historians (1970s) rediscovered her.

Posthumous recognition (1980s-present): Zeev Aram reissued furniture (1970s). Auction records (2009). Documentaries, biographies. Gray recognized as modernist equal to male contemporaries.

Legacy

“Pioneer of modernism” denied credit during lifetime. Corbusier’s vandalism symbolic of male architects overshadowing women. E-1027 now celebrated as feminist architectural landmark.

Furniture commands museum prices. E-1027 table = modernist icon (alongside Eames Lounge, Barcelona Chair).
