The Magic

Electric Forest is a transformative music and arts festival held annually in Rothbury, Michigan (Double JJ Ranch) since 2011. Known for the enchanted Sherwood Forest (100+ acres of light installations and art), bass music dominance, and a community-first culture that prioritizes creativity over commercialism.

Birth from Rothbury

Electric Forest emerged from the ashes of Rothbury Music Festival (2008-2009), relaunched by Insomniac Events and Madison House. The festival merged EDM with jam band culture (String Cheese Incident as annual headliners), creating a hybrid audience unique in festival culture.

The Forest Experience

Sherwood Forest becomes a interactive art gallery at night: LED-lit trees, projection-mapped installations, hidden speakeasy stages (Honey Pot, Observatory), art cars, hammock lounges, and the iconic Hangar stage inside a 1930s aircraft hangar. Attendees spend hours wandering without watching a single set.

Musical Identity

Electric Forest carved its niche with bass music: Bassnectar (2011-2019 every year), GRiZ (homecoming hero from Detroit), Pretty Lights, SoDown, Big Gigantic. The 2013-2018 era defined the “wook bass” sound (jam-influenced electronic music with live instruments).

Cultural Moments

2012: First String Cheese Incident “Incident” set (fan-curated deep cuts)
2013: Bassnectar Friday Night Lights (became annual tradition, 30,000 attendees)
2015: Skrillex Mothership takeover (spaceship stage descended into crowd)
2016: Expansion to two weekends (90,000 total attendees)
2017: GRiZ Live Band debut at Tripolee Stage (Detroit homecoming)
2019: Odesza farewell tour stop (emotional melodic bass movement)

Community Culture

#ForestFamily became more than a hashtag — annual reunions, Good Life VIP village marriages, RV camp communities, radical inclusion ethos. The festival’s Code of Conduct emphasized consent, harm reduction (DanceSafe Zendo tent), and Leave No Trace principles.

Post-Pandemic Evolution

2020-2021: Cancelled (COVID)
2022: Return as single weekend (reduced capacity, sustainability focus)
2023: Continued single weekend format with enhanced art installations

Fashion & Aesthetic

Forest fashion: flower crowns, body paint, LED poi/hoop, spirit hoods, fur boots, trippy tapestries. The “wook” aesthetic (dreadlocks, barefoot, psychedelic fashion) became defining visual identity.
