Everest Base Camp trek is a 12-14 day journey through Nepal’s Khumbu region to reach the staging area for Mount Everest expeditions (17,598 ft). The hashtag documents one of the world’s most popular bucket-list treks, with 40,000+ annual trekkers by 2019.

Route

Starting from Lukla airport (one of world’s most dangerous, 9,334 ft runway), the trek passes through Sherpa villages (Namche Bazaar, Tengboche), yak trains, suspension bridges, and Buddhist monasteries before reaching EBC. Round trip covers ~80 miles with 16,000+ feet elevation gain.

Cultural Highlights

Tengboche Monastery (Buddhist ceremonies), Sherpa culture, prayer flags, mani stones, and views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam. The hashtag celebrates tea house culture, dal bhat meals, and sunrise from Kala Patthar (18,519 ft viewpoint).

Challenges

Altitude sickness (acclimatization days required), unpredictable weather, thin air above 12,000 ft, and the psychological challenge of multi-day trekking. Diamox (altitude medication) and “climb high, sleep low” protocol are standard.

Commercialization Concerns

The hashtag documents both the magic of Himalayan trekking and concerns about over-tourism, trash accumulation, and environmental impact. 2019 saw record crowds coinciding with viral “Everest traffic jam” photos.
