SpaceX Falcon 9 First Landing
On December 21, 2015, SpaceX achieved a historic milestone when Falcon 9 first stage successfully landed vertically at Cape Canaveral Landing Zone 1 after delivering 11 Orbcomm satellites to orbit. Unlike Blue Origin’s New Shepard suborbital landing one month prior, Falcon 9 reached orbital velocity (~7,500 mph) before returning—a significantly harder engineering challenge requiring hypersonic reentry and supersonic retropropulsion.
The 15-story booster executed a controlled descent using three Merlin engines, deployed landing legs, and touched down nine minutes after liftoff. The success validated SpaceX’s reusability vision that established aerospace companies dismissed as impossible or economically unviable. By 2023, SpaceX had landed 200+ boosters, with some flying 15+ missions—dramatically reducing launch costs from $60M to under $30M per flight and enabling Starlink’s satellite constellation deployment.
The December 2015 landing represented the Wright Brothers moment for reusable spaceflight, proving rockets could land like airplanes rather than being discarded in the ocean.
