The modular, user-repairable laptop that challenged planned obsolescence and won tech enthusiasts’ hearts despite niche market share.
Right to Repair Champion
Announced February 2021 and shipped July 2021, the Framework Laptop ($999+) featured user-replaceable everything: ports (swappable USB-C/A, HDMI, SD card modules), battery, keyboard, screen, motherboard. The design explicitly rejected industry trends toward glued, soldered, unrepairable devices. Founder Nirav Patel (ex-Oculus) positioned it as sustainability and consumer empowerment.
Tech Community Embrace
Tech YouTube (Linus Tech Tips, iFixit, Marques Brownlee) loved Framework. iFixit gave it 10/10 repairability—unprecedented for modern laptops. Pre-orders exceeded expectations. The laptop offered respectable specs (Intel 11th/12th gen, good keyboard, 3:2 display) at competitive prices. The modularity was the point—upgrade components as needed rather than replacing the entire device.
Sustainable Growth
Framework shipped the 13” Laptop (2021), then upgraded to 12th gen Intel (2022) and AMD Ryzen (2023). Crucially, older Framework owners could buy new mainboards and upgrade—proving the modularity promise. The 16” Framework Laptop (2023) added GPU upgradeability. While sales remained tens of thousands (not millions), Framework proved sustainable laptops could be viable businesses, influencing Apple and others to improve repairability.
