Also known as: FrontTrunkFrunkLifeFrunkStorage

Portmanteau of “front trunk” — storage space where engine normally sits in EVs. Tesla Model S (2012) popularized term. F-150 Lightning’s massive frunk (2022) made it mainstream.

Origins

Porsche 911 had front luggage area (1964+, rear-engine layout). Tesla Model S (2012) called it “frunk,” term stuck. Every EV since copied feature (no engine = front storage opportunity).

Practical Uses

Groceries (keeps cold, no trunk smell), camping gear, tools, wet/dirty items separation. Tesla frunk: 5.3 cu ft (Model S/X), 3.1 cu ft (Model 3/Y). Small but useful.

F-150 Lightning Revolution (2022)

400L mega frunk (14 cu ft), drains for coolers/ice, four 120V outlets (2 kW total), built-in work surface. “Tailgate party in the front” marketing. Power tools, camping, job sites.

Cultural Phenomenon

#Frunk = EV flex, practical storage porn, “ICE cars can’t do this” superiority. Frunk pet photos (controversial), frunk grocery hauls, frunk camping setups. Rivian gear tunnel similar vibe.

Safety Concerns

Pinch-force sensors prevent injury. Tesla frunk “finger test” videos (2021-2022) showed inconsistent force limits. Software updates adjusted sensitivity.
