GenderReveal

YouTube 2010-07 lifestyle declining Updated 2026-02-15
Early 2010s Massive scale 2 billion+ lifetime posts

First documented in July 2010 on YouTube. Currently in a period of declining activity from earlier peak engagement.

Also known as: GenderRevealPartyBoyOrGirl

Celebration where expectant parents publicly reveal baby’s biological sex through elaborate stunts. Trend started 2008 by Jenna Karvunidis (ironically, her child later came out as gender nonconforming). Exploded on Pinterest/YouTube 2010-2015, peaked 2017-2019, declining since 2020 due to disasters and gender politics.

Evolution

Started innocently: cutting cakes with pink/blue interior. Escalated to colored smoke bombs, confetti cannons, tannerite explosions, alligator bites, and plane crashes. Each reveal tried to out-spectacle the last. Became aspirational Instagram content - “pics or it didn’t happen” culture.

Controversies

2020 El Dorado wildfire (California) caused by pyrotechnic device - burned 22,000 acres, killed firefighter. 2019 Iowa grandmother killed by shrapnel from pipe bomb reveal. Multiple plane crashes. Movement faced criticism for reinforcing gender binaries and prioritizing performance over safety. Many now opt for private reveals or “gender neutral” baby showers.
