Geographic arbitrage is earning high-income-area wages while living in low-cost-of-living areas. Digital nomads pioneered this (SF salary $150K living in Chiang Mai Thailand spending $20K/year), but COVID-2020 remote work mainstreamed it (NYC $200K salary in Austin/Miami/Nashville). Resulted in savings rate increases from 20% to 60%+. Backlash: companies adjusting salaries based on location (Google cuts 15-25%), local resentment of transplants driving up rents, gentrification concerns, state tax arbitrage (CA→TX/FL saves 13.3%).
