Overview

#GeotaggingDebate sparked 2016-2020 discussions over Instagram location tagging’s impact on fragile/remote areas. Photographers/influencers debated responsibility: share beauty to inspire conservation vs. protect spots from Instagram-driven destruction. #TagResponsibly movement advocated vague tags (“Pacific Northwest” not exact trailhead), but some saw it as gatekeeping.

Viral examples: secret California wildflower “superbloom” fields destroyed by Instagram crowds (2017-2019), Arizona hot springs trashed, Oregon’s Oneonta Gorge closure (2017) after social media overcrowding. One influencer’s post = 10K visitors within weeks, overwhelming parking, trails, ecosystems.

Outdoor brands, park services, Leave No Trace campaigns urged: tag general regions not GPS coordinates, educate followers on ethics, accept some places best unshared. Counterargument: public lands belong to everyone; elitism in “I got mine, now protect it from others.”

Instagram added “sensitive location” features (2019) letting users/organizations request location tag removals for endangered sites. Wanaka Tree (NZ), Lake Sorapis (Italy) examples where geotagging accelerated degradation.
