Also known as: GezelligGezelligheidDutchCozyCoziness

The Dutch concept of cozy togetherness and warm atmosphere that’s more about people and vibe than physical comfort alone.

Untranslatable Warmth

Gezelligheid (noun) and gezellig (adjective) describe cozy, convivial atmosphere—but it’s more social than hygge. A gezellig evening involves good friends, conversation, laughter, warmth, and togetherness. A café can be gezellig (warm, welcoming). The Dutch say something is “gezellig” constantly—it’s highest praise for social environments. The concept prioritizes social warmth over material comfort.

Post-Hygge Discovery

After hygge (2016) and lagom (2017), lifestyle media discovered gezelligheid (2018-2019) as the next Nordic/European lifestyle export. Articles explained gezelligheid as “hygge’s more social cousin.” The Dutch concept emphasized community and conviviality over solitary coziness. But gezelligheid was harder to pronounce and commercialize than hygge, limiting mainstream adoption.

Cultural Depth

Gezelligheid reflects Dutch cultural values: egalitarianism, directness, and social connection. The Netherlands’ café culture and cycling communities embody gezelligheid. While the term never reached hygge’s international fame, it resonated with people seeking social connection over consumption—especially post-pandemic when people craved meaningful togetherness.
