Gimlet Media (October 2014) was a podcast network founded by Alex Blumberg and Matt Lieber that pioneered narrative podcasting and brought venture capital to the medium before being acquired by Spotify for $230 million in 2019.
Founding & Philosophy
Gimlet launched with StartUp — a podcast about starting Gimlet itself, documenting Alex’s fundraising, hiring, and company-building. The meta-narrative created unprecedented transparency and built devoted fanbase before the company had other shows.
Gimlet’s mission: create “smart, surprising, beautiful podcasts” with NPR-quality production but commercial sustainability. The company brought Silicon Valley ambition to public radio aesthetics.
Hit Shows
Gimlet produced some of podcasting’s most influential shows:
- Reply All (2014) — tech/internet culture investigation
- Homecoming (2016) — fiction podcast starring Catherine Keener, adapted by Amazon
- Heavyweight (2016) — emotional closure storytelling
- Crimetown (2016) — organized crime deep dive
- Science Vs (acquired 2016) — myth-busting science show
Spotify Acquisition & Decline
Spotify acquired Gimlet in February 2019 for ~$230 million as part of its $1 billion podcast spending spree. The deal made Gimlet founders multimillionaires and validated podcast VC model.
However, post-acquisition, Gimlet’s identity eroded — shows canceled, founders departed, union battles, creative constraints. By 2023, the Gimlet brand was largely absorbed into Spotify Studios.
