Origin & Impact
As Google Glass rolled out to early adopters in 2013, the term “Glasshole” emerged to describe users who wore the camera-equipped eyewear in socially inappropriate contexts. Bars, restaurants, and gyms banned Google Glass over privacy concerns about constant recording without consent.
The hashtag captured public backlash against tech elitism and surveillance. Stories of Glass wearers being confronted or attacked spread on social media. Google eventually pulled the consumer version in 2015, partly due to the social stigma captured by #Glasshole. The term became shorthand for tech products that ignore social norms in pursuit of innovation.
