South Korean boy group known for acrobatic performances, self-produced music, and one of K-pop’s most dramatic contract departures. All seven members left JYP Entertainment in 2021 but continued as GOT7 independently.
Acrobatic Beginnings
GOT7 debuted on January 16, 2014, under JYP Entertainment with “Girls Girls Girls” — incorporating martial arts tricking and b-boy moves into choreography, distinguishing them from typical K-pop dance. The group’s name means “7 lucky gods.”
Seven members: JB (leader), Mark, Jackson, Jinyoung, Youngjae, BamBam, Yugyeom — included multinational members from Korea, USA, Hong Kong, Thailand.
International Identity
GOT7 was marketed as JYP’s global group:
- Jackson (Hong Kong) became a celebrity in China
- BamBam (Thailand) maintained massive Thai fanbase
- Mark (USA) brought Western perspective
- Member diversity allowed promotions across Asia simultaneously
Their music blended hip-hop, EDM, and R&B, evolving toward self-production by 2017.
Self-Production Era
2017-2020: Members (especially leader JB/JAY B and Youngjae) increasingly wrote and produced their music:
- “Never Ever” (2017)
- “Lullaby” (2018) — their first self-produced title track
- “NOT BY THE MOON” (2020)
- “Breath of Love: Last Piece” (2020)
This creative control became a point of friction with JYP Entertainment.
Historic Departure
January 2021: All seven members left JYP Entertainment simultaneously when contracts expired — unprecedented in K-pop. Typically, at least some members renew.
The twist: They retained the “GOT7” trademark and group rights, allowing them to promote together under their own terms while signed to different agencies individually.
Independent Success
2022: GOT7 released self-titled EP GOT7 independently, charting globally and proving groups can succeed outside the traditional K-pop agency system. This inspired other groups to renegotiate contracts.
