Grimes’ Art Angels transformed Claire Boucher from underground experimental artist to pop auteur, creating one of the decade’s most inventive and divisive albums.
The Album
Released November 6, 2015, Art Angels was Grimes’ fourth album and a radical departure from her previous work. Where Visions (2012) was ethereal and lo-fi, Art Angels was polished, aggressive, and pop-oriented. Grimes wrote, produced, and performed every instrument herself, rejecting industry producers.
The Sound
Art Angels blended hyperpop, nu-metal, K-pop, industrial, and art-pop into a maximalist sound. Songs featured screaming vocals, distorted guitars, trap beats, violin, and layered synths. Grimes’ anime-influenced aesthetic and DIY ethos collided with radio-ready hooks.
Standout Tracks
- “Flesh without Blood” - Lead single, bubblegum pop with dark lyrics about abusive relationships
- “Kill V. Maim” - Nu-metal influenced banger, Al Pacino Godfather II inspiration, “B-E-H-A-V-E, arrest us!”
- “California” - Synth-pop ode to LA with violin outro
- “Scream” ft. Aristophanes - Mandarin death metal screams, most abrasive track
- “EASILY” - Frantic, anxious energy
- “World Princess part II” - Ethereal closer
Critical Acclaim and Backlash
Art Angels received universal acclaim: Pitchfork 9.3/10 (later demoted to 7.4 amid Grimes’ controversial Elon Musk relationship), Rolling Stone 4/5, The Guardian 5/5. It topped year-end lists from Billboard, NME, and more. But some fans felt betrayed by the pop pivot, calling it “sellout.”
Grimes the Producer
Art Angels proved Grimes as a production genius. She designed every sound, wrote all songs, played all instruments, and even directed most music videos. The album challenged gendered assumptions about electronic music production—women could create aggressive, complex, self-produced pop.
Elon Musk and Legacy
Grimes dated Elon Musk (2018-2022), had two children (X Æ A-12, Exa Dark Sideræl), and became tabloid fodder. Her politics became controversial—anti-imperialist activist turned billionaire’s partner. Art Angels’ legacy is complicated: a masterpiece tarnished by association.
The album influenced hyperpop (100 gecs, Charli XCX, Sophie), DIY pop production, and anime-pop aesthetics. Grimes released Miss Anthropocene (2020), but Art Angels remains her peak—proof of uncompromising vision before celebrity consumed it.
