The Chinese concept of personal connections and networks essential for business and social success in Chinese society.

Relationship Capital

Guanxi (关系, “relationships”) is system of social networks and reciprocal favors fundamental to Chinese business and society. It’s not just networking—it’s cultivating deep, mutually beneficial relationships built on trust, obligation, and face (mianzi). Good guanxi opens doors; lack of guanxi closes them. The concept dates to Confucian emphasis on social harmony and relationships.

Business Essential

In Chinese business, guanxi often matters more than contracts or credentials. Deals happen through personal connections. Giving gifts, sharing meals, and doing favors build guanxi. Western businesspeople entering Chinese markets learned guanxi was prerequisite—you couldn’t just send emails and expect results. Building guanxi required time, respect, and understanding reciprocity.

Global Business Influence

By 2010s-2020s, guanxi influenced global business thinking. LinkedIn adopted guanxi-like relationship capitalism. The concept challenged Western transactional business models, suggesting relationships create value beyond immediate deals. Critics noted guanxi could enable corruption—favors blurring into bribery. But guanxi’s emphasis on long-term relationships offered alternative to short-term profit maximization.
