Happier Than Ever — Billie Eilish’s second studio album, released July 30, 2021, a maturation from her debut’s darkness into introspective indie-pop and jazz, addressing fame’s toxicity, relationships, and media scrutiny.
The Album
16 tracks produced by brother Finneas in their home studio (again). Billie shed the teen angst for 20-year-old reflection. Softer, jazzier, with orchestral moments and a rock explosion on the title track.
Key tracks: “Happier Than Ever” (title track, crescendo guitar catharsis), “my future” (self-love anthem), “Billie Bossa Nova,” “I Didn’t Change My Number,” “Therefore I Am” (#2 hit, hater diss), “Oxytocin,” “Goldwing,” “Lost Cause,” “Halley’s Comet,” “Getting Older” (opener addressing body autonomy post-doc scandal).
Chart performance: Debuted #1 with 238,000 units. Spent 3 non-consecutive weeks at #1. Certified Platinum. All 16 tracks charted on Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously (for a female artist).
Growing Up In Public
HTE addressed fame’s dark side—paparazzi, body-shaming, “Billie Eilish is boring now” takes after she ditched neon hair for blonde. “Getting Older” referenced the doc The World’s A Little Blurry showing her Tourette’s and injury struggles.
The title track’s explosive guitar rant (“You call me again, drunk in your Benz / Drivin’ home under the influence / You scared me to death but I’m wasting my breath / ‘Cause you only listen to your fucking friends / I don’t relate to you”) was cathartic rage against an ex (rumored to be 7:AMP’s Brandon Q. Adams or Jesse Rutherford).
Critical Reception
Metacritic 85/100, Pitchfork 7.6/10, Rolling Stone 4/5. Critics praised maturity but noted less innovation than her debut. Some called it boring. Fans loved the vulnerability.
7 Grammy nominations including Album/Record/Song of the Year. Lost AOTY to Jon Batiste’s We Are. Won Best Pop Vocal Album.
Cultural Impact
The Disney+ concert film Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles (Sept 2021) featured Billie performing at the Hollywood Bowl with full orchestra, cementing her artistry.
#HappierThanEver #BillieEilish trended during release. The album’s softer sound alienated some fans who wanted more “bad guy” energy, but it proved Billie wasn’t a one-trick pony.
