Harlem Shake became February 2013’s viral video phenomenon: 30-second clips starting with one person dancing alone to Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” EDM track, then jump-cutting to entire group in costumes dancing wildly. 40,000+ videos uploaded daily at peak, though original Harlem (dance from 1980s) residents criticized appropriation of their culture’s name.
The Format
Person dances alone (often wearing helmet) for 15 seconds → bass drop → everyone dances in costumes/chaos.
The Explosion
Originated with YouTube vloggers Filthy Frank and Joji, exploded globally: college dorms, offices, military units, even underwater divers created versions. Peak: 4,000 uploads per day.
The Controversy
Harlem residents noted the meme had nothing to do with actual Harlem Shake dance (originated 1980s in Harlem, NYC). Cultural appropriation debates emerged.
The Decline
Oversaturation killed trend within weeks. By March 2013, meme was over. Baauer’s track hit #1 on Billboard Hot 100.
