The 2014 Off-Broadway rock musical adaptation of the 1988 cult film about high school murder, toxic masculinity, and teenage suicide, becoming a TikTok phenomenon and Gen Z theater obsession despite its controversial subject matter.
Big Fun, Dead Girl Walking
“Heathers” premiered Off-Broadway March 31, 2014, at New World Stages, transforming the dark comedy into a high-energy rock musical. The show follows Veronica Sawyer navigating a clique of popular girls all named Heather while dating J.D., a sociopath who turns her revenge fantasies into actual murders disguised as suicides.
The musical deepened the film’s satire of high school hierarchy, toxic masculinity, and adult obliviousness to teen suffering. Songs like “Dead Girl Walking” (Veronica’s life-affirming sexual agency), “Big Fun” (house party chaos), and “Seventeen” (plea for normal teenage existence) became theater kid standards.
Barrett Wilbert Weed’s Veronica and Ryan McCartan’s J.D. created definitive performances. The show ran Off-Broadway until 2018, then toured, gaining cult following particularly among young women who saw Veronica’s journey from people-pleaser to agentive protagonist as feminist empowerment.
The 2018 brief Broadway run was overshadowed by controversy - the Parkland school shooting (February 2018) made a musical about high school violence and gun-wielding J.D. feel tone-deaf. The show closed after 1 month despite critical success.
During COVID lockdown, TikTok theater kids rediscovered “Heathers,” creating lip-sync videos that brought it to Gen Z audiences who hadn’t seen it live, generating 3 billion views and revival speculation.
