Anti-Tourism Tourism

HiddenGems emerged as travelers sought authentic experiences away from overtourism hotspots. The hashtag ironically contributed to problem it claimed to solve: sharing “secret” locations made them no longer secret.

The Paradox

Influencers posted “hidden gem” content to demonstrate insider knowledge and authentic travel. But public sharing triggered visitor floods to previously obscure locations. What was hidden yesterday became overcrowded tomorrow.

Famous Formerly-Hidden Gems

Horseshoe Bend (Arizona): Instagram made it viral, visitors grew from 750K (2010) to 2M+ (2018). Required fencing to prevent selfie deaths.

Lake Sorapis (Italy): Turquoise Alpine lake, unknown pre-2015, became overwhelmed 2017-2019. Locals banned tripods, limited parking.

Secret Beach (Marieta Islands, Mexico): Hidden beach inside collapsed cave, Instagram fame led to closure for ecological recovery 2016.

Fairy Pools (Isle of Skye, Scotland): Obscure swimming holes became Instagram essential, parking chaos, trail erosion.

Local Backlash

Residents of “discovered” locations resented influencer culture. Some communities removed signage, spread misinformation about access, or implemented permit systems to limit visitors.

Gatekeeping Culture

Debate emerged: should travelers share hidden gems or protect them through silence? Some used vague geotags (“somewhere in Italy”) or refused to disclose locations.

Sustainable Alternatives

Responsible travel advocates promoted spreading tourism across multiple lesser-known destinations rather than creating new singular hotspots.
