#HSP (Highly Sensitive Person)

A personality trait characterized by deep processing of stimuli, emotional intensity, and sensory sensitivity.

Origins

Psychologist Elaine Aron coined the term in her 1996 book The Highly Sensitive Person. Social media adoption began in the 2010s as people sought explanations for feeling “too sensitive.”

Characteristics (DOES)

  • Depth of processing (think deeply about everything)
  • Overstimulation (overwhelmed by noise, crowds, busy environments)
  • Emotional reactivity (feel emotions intensely, high empathy)
  • Sensory sensitivity (notice subtleties others miss)

Prevalence

~15-20% of population (across genders and species—observed in animals too)

Common Experiences

  • Needing alone time after socializing
  • Crying easily
  • Avoiding violent movies
  • Sensitive to caffeine, medications
  • Rich inner life
  • Strong reaction to criticism

Misconceptions

  • Not the same as introversion (30% of HSPs are extroverts)
  • Not a disorder (it’s a trait, not pathology)
  • Not weakness (depth of processing has advantages)

Overlap with Other Traits

  • Autism (sensory sensitivities, but distinct conditions)
  • ADHD (emotional dysregulation, but different mechanisms)
  • Anxiety (can co-occur, but HSP ≠ anxious)
