Iconic horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River near Page, Arizona. The 1,000-foot drop and dramatic bend became one of the most Instagrammed viewpoints in the American Southwest.
Viral Growth
Annual visitors surged from 15,000 in 2010 to 2 million+ by 2018, driven almost entirely by social media. The relatively unknown viewpoint exploded after Instagram launched in 2010, with the distinctive aerial-like perspective becoming ubiquitous.
Free and easily accessible (3/4 mile hike from parking), unlike nearby Antelope Canyon’s paid guided tours, making it a budget-friendly Instagram destination.
Safety Concerns
No barriers at cliff edge led to multiple deaths and near-misses. In 2018, the National Park Service installed fencing along portions of the rim after several fatal falls while taking selfies.
$10 parking fee implemented in 2019 to fund infrastructure improvements, restrooms, and expanded parking for 200+ cars during peak season.
Sunrise/Sunset Photography
Optimal lighting occurs during golden hour, though midday sun illuminates the river’s turquoise color. Wide-angle lenses (10-24mm) necessary to capture the full bend from the viewing area.
Drone photography was popular until banned in 2018 due to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area regulations.
