#HouseOfTheDragonS3 is the hashtag for HBO’s third season of House of the Dragon, premiering June 21, 2026 on HBO and HBO Max. The eight-episode run picks up the Targaryen civil war (“the Dance of the Dragons”) at the point season 2 left it — Aemond on the Iron Throne, Alicent gone from King’s Landing, Rhaenyra finding new dragons — and opens with showrunner Ryan Condal’s promise of “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made”: the Battle of the Gullet.

- Notable casting: James Norton joins as Ormund Hightower
What Happens This Season
The full trailer, released by HBO at the end of May, opens with Aemond Targaryen on the Iron Throne — his brother Aegon disfigured by dragonfire in last season’s finale — and confirms Queen Alicent Hightower has secretly left King’s Landing. Rhaenyra is shown gathering new dragons for her side. The Battle of the Gullet, in which Rhaenyra’s son Jacaerys flies his dragon against House Velaryon’s navy, is teased in the trailer as the season opener.
The new season also brings James Norton into the cast as Ormund Hightower — Otto Hightower’s nephew, Alicent’s cousin, and the Lord of Oldtown, who is marching the Hightower host on King’s Landing in support of Aegon. The principal returning cast — Matt Smith (Daemon), Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra), Rhys Ifans (Otto), Steve Toussaint (Corlys), Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria), Fabien Frankel (Criston Cole), Olivia Cooke (Alicent), Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon II), Ewan Mitchell (Aemond) — all return.
Why It Matters
Penultimate-season stakes. HBO confirmed last year that House of the Dragon will end after season 4, so this is the run where the show has to convert two seasons of slow-burn court politics into the open warfare fans have been waiting for. Coverage in Variety and Deadline led with that framing — “war hits Westeros” — and Condal’s “craziest episode of television ever made” quote was repeated in nearly every preview.
HBO’s summer flagship. With the GoT prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms also in production, Season 3 functions as HBO’s biggest fantasy programming bet of the summer — coinciding with the FIFA World Cup, the Olivia Rodrigo album cycle, and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 in the same three-week window.
