HTC Vive
The HTC Vive launched April 5, 2016 for $799 as the first room-scale VR system, developed in partnership with Valve (Steam VR). The Vive’s two Lighthouse base stations enabled 15’ x 15’ play spaces with sub-millimeter tracking precision, offering full-body presence in VR that seated Oculus Rift ($599) couldn’t match.
Room-Scale VR Revolution
The Vive’s defining feature was “roomscale” tracking: users physically walked, ducked, and reached in virtual environments. Tilt Brush (Google’s VR painting app), Job Simulator, and Budget Cuts demonstrated room-scale’s immersive potential. The Chaperone boundary system prevented users from walking into walls.
Lighthouse Tracking Technology
Valve’s Lighthouse system used two wall-mounted base stations emitting infrared lasers to track headset and controller positions. The system required no cameras or external processing—sensors on the headset calculated position from laser sweeps. The open-source tracking protocol encouraged third-party accessories.
Early VR Adopter Platform
The Vive dominated early VR enthusiast market, capturing 40%+ of SteamVR headset share in 2017. Half-Life: Alyx (2020) was optimized for Vive controllers’ trackpads. VR arcades standardized on Vive hardware for commercial installations. The $799 price targeted serious gamers, not casual users.
Competition & Decline
Oculus Quest’s standalone wireless VR (2019, $399) made the Vive’s tethered PC requirement feel dated. Valve Index (2019, $999) offered superior controllers and audio, cannibalizing Vive Pro sales. HTC struggled with buggy software, poor customer service, and premium pricing ($1,399 Vive Pro) as competition undercut them.
Vive Focus & Enterprise Pivot
HTC pivoted to standalone Vive Focus headsets (2018, 2021) and enterprise VR (training simulations, virtual meetings). Consumer VR market share collapsed as Meta Quest dominated. By 2023 Vive accounted for <5% of VR headsets sold, a stunning fall from 2016-2017 dominance.
