Imperial Stout — high-ABV (8-12%+), intensely roasted, often barrel-aged — became craft beer’s luxury category, with rare releases commanding $50-100+ per bottle. #ImperialStout documented the style’s evolution from Russian history to American pastry stouts.

Historical Roots

Imperial Stout originated in 18th-century England, brewed strong for export to Russian Imperial courts. The style nearly disappeared until Samuel Smith revived it in the 1980s. American craft brewers embraced it in the 2000s, aging stouts in bourbon barrels for vanilla, oak, and whiskey flavors.

Goose Island’s Bourbon County Brand Stout (BCBS, first released 1992, but gained cult status post-2010) became the benchmark. Black Friday releases created lines of thousands. Variants (coffee, vanilla, barleywine) traded for $100+ on secondary markets.

The Adjunct Explosion

By 2014, breweries began adding “adjuncts” beyond bourbon barrels: vanilla beans, coffee, cacao nibs, coconut, peanut butter, marshmallow, and maple syrup. “Pastry stouts” mimicked desserts — birthday cake, s’mores, ice cream sundaes. Prairie Artisan Ales’ Bomb! (2012, coffee/vanilla/cacao/chilies) pioneered the trend.

Bottle shares and online trading communities (MyBeerCollectibles, BeerAdvocate forums) emerged. Rare stouts became commodities: 2015 Bourbon County Proprietor’s traded for $300+. Breweries like Bottle Logic, Side Project, and Perennial created “stout clubs” with membership fees and allocation systems.

Criticism and Saturation

By 2018, the pastry stout market was oversaturated. Critics argued adjunct-heavy beers masked brewing flaws and that the style had become a “gimmick.” The 2019 Untappd ratings scandal (breweries allegedly manipulating scores) damaged trust. Barrel-aged stout releases lost some cachet as every brewery offered variants.

Despite backlash, #ImperialStout remained a cornerstone of craft beer culture. Limited releases still sold out, and aging cellars became status symbols among collectors. By 2023, the style matured, with breweries balancing innovation and classic roasted malt profiles.
