Greatest Spectacle in Racing
Indianapolis 500 (established 1911) maintained Memorial Day weekend tradition 2010-2023: 300K+ attendance, historic Indy Motor Speedway, and American open-wheel racing prestige. #Indy500 captured: Helio Castroneves 4th win (2021), Fernando Alonso’s pursuit of Triple Crown, Takuma Sato victories (2017/2020), and Pato O’Ward Mexican fanbase growth.
IndyCar’s Challenge
While F1 surged via Netflix, IndyCar struggled for relevance beyond Indy 500 itself. Split from CART/Champ Car (1996-2008) damaged American open-wheel racing. The hashtag showed: passionate die-hard fanbase, road/street/oval variety, incredible racing, but minimal mainstream attention except Memorial Day. 2020-2023 saw modest growth: younger drivers, improved TV coverage, but still overshadowed by F1/NASCAR.
