The Hashtag

#InfrastructureWeek became darkly ironic code for “a week when everything went wrong for Trump,” after every attempted infrastructure announcement was derailed by scandal.

Origins

The first Infrastructure Week was scheduled for June 2017 to showcase Trump’s $1 trillion infrastructure plan. Instead, that week saw James Comey’s explosive testimony, Trump’s attack on London’s mayor after a terror attack, and continued Russia investigation news.

The pattern repeated throughout his presidency—every time the White House announced “Infrastructure Week,” a major scandal or self-inflicted crisis dominated headlines instead.

Cultural Impact

Notable Infrastructure Weeks that weren’t:

  • November 2017: Roy Moore scandal, tax bill chaos
  • February 2018: Rob Porter domestic abuse, school shooting
  • May 2019: Trump stormed out of infrastructure meeting with Pelosi
  • Every subsequent attempt became a running joke

Political journalists used the hashtag to mark the gap between White House messaging and reality. It symbolized the administration’s inability to control the narrative or focus on policy.

Ironically, Biden passed a $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill in 2021—actually accomplishing what Trump couldn’t. The hashtag briefly revived in celebration of the irony.
