Origin & Impact
Instagram shocked the social media world by adding video on June 20, 2013, directly challenging Twitter’s Vine. The hashtag tracked the feature’s rapid adoption: 5 million videos uploaded in the first 24 hours. Instagram’s longer 15-second format and built-in filters gave it advantages over Vine’s raw 6-second clips.
The move demonstrated Facebook’s strategy of copying and crushing competitors (they’d acquired Instagram in 2012). Brands rushed to create Instagram videos, and the feature accelerated Instagram’s growth. While Vine maintained a distinct creative culture, Instagram Video’s success contributed to Vine’s eventual decline. Instagram later extended videos to 60 seconds.
