Interrail

Also known as: InterrailEuropeEurailPass

European train pass allowing unlimited travel across 33 countries, popular with students and budget travelers. Instagram romanticized scenic train journeys, overnight sleepers, and multi-country adventures, though reservations, crowding, and costs challenged the budget travel ideal.

Pass Types

Interrail (European residents) and Eurail (non-Europeans) offered flexible passes: continuous (7, 15, 22 days, 1-3 months) or flexi (4, 5, 7 travel days within 1 month). Prices ranged €200-600 depending on age, duration, class.

Youth passes (<28) offered discounts. First-class versus second-class determined comfort level and reservation availability.

Classic Routes

Popular circuits:

  • Western Europe: Paris → Brussels → Amsterdam → Berlin → Prague → Vienna → Munich → Switzerland → Paris
  • Mediterranean: Barcelona → French Riviera → Cinque Terre → Rome → Venice → Ljubljana → Croatia
  • Scandinavia: Copenhagen → Oslo → Bergen → Stockholm → Helsinki

Overnight trains (Vienna-Venice, Berlin-Stockholm) saved accommodation costs but required expensive reservations (€10-60) on top of pass.

Instagram Aesthetic

Scenic routes photographed beautifully: Swiss Alps (Bernina Express, Glacier Express), Norwegian fjords, Rhine Valley castles, Scottish Highlands. Window-seat shots, coffee cups, and notebooks epitomized slow travel aesthetic.

However, reality included: crowded trains, missed connections, heavy backpacks navigating stairs, reservation confusion, and expensive supplements for high-speed trains (Thalys, TGV).

Budget Reality

Interrail marketed as budget travel, but costs added up: reservations, accommodation, food, attractions. Many spent €50-100 daily on top of pass cost—comparable to cheap flights between cities.

Reservation systems frustrated—some routes required advance booking, others walk-on. Night trains sold out months ahead during summer. Budget travelers slept in stations or day trains to save money.

Environmental Appeal

“Flight shame” movement positioned train travel as sustainable alternative. Interrail grew 20%+ annually 2017-2019 as environmentally-conscious travelers chose trains over budget airlines.

However, night train routes declined 2000s-2010s as budget airlines undercut prices. Recent revival (ÖBB Nightjet expansion, European Sleeper) restored some connections.

Cultural Exchange

Interrail fostered cross-cultural friendships—travelers meeting in hostels, sharing recommendations, traveling together spontaneously. The experience shaped many Europeans’ understanding of continental diversity.
