Pennywise’s Terrifying Return
#ITMovie became the highest-grossing horror film ever when it premiered in September 2017, earning $701 million worldwide. Andy Muschietti’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel (specifically the children’s timeline) introduced Bill Skarsgård’s nightmare-inducing Pennywise to a new generation.
Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise
Skarsgård’s interpretation—drooling, lazy-eyed, with impossible facial contortions—replaced Tim Curry’s campy 1990 miniseries version. His “You’ll float too” delivery became instantly memes, despite being genuinely terrifying. The red balloon became horror’s simplest, most effective symbol.
Georgie’s Death
The opening scene—Pennywise biting off Georgie’s arm and dragging him into the sewer—established the film’s willingness to show child endangerment unflinchingly. Jackson Robert Scott’s performance as Georgie made his death hit harder, especially when Bill sees his ghost asking “Why did you let me die?”
The Losers Club Chemistry
The young cast’s (Jaeden Martell, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, etc.) authentic friendship carried the film. Their banter, vulnerability, and loyalty made the horror personal. The group’s battle against both Pennywise and their individual traumas resonated with coming-of-age stories like Stand By Me.
Beverly’s Bathroom Blood Geyser
The scene where Beverly’s bathroom explodes with blood visible only to her (the boys see nothing) became the film’s most visually striking sequence. It represented both supernatural horror and the isolating experience of puberty/womanhood that others can’t see.
Chapter Two’s Disappointment
The 2019 sequel, featuring the adult Losers, received mixed reviews. While James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, and Bill Hader delivered strong performances, the film’s inflated runtime (169 minutes) and reliance on CGI diminished the first film’s impact.
