The Hindi concept of frugal innovation—finding clever, low-cost workarounds to problems with limited resources.

Indian Ingenuity

Jugaad (जुगाड़) means improvised solution using minimal resources. It’s fixing a tractor with bicycle parts, creating irrigation from discarded pipes, or building businesses on shoestring budgets. Jugaad emerged from Indian scarcity economics—when proper tools weren’t available, Indians improvised. The term represents resourcefulness, creativity, and making do.

Business Philosophy

The book Jugaad Innovation (2012) positioned jugaad as business strategy. Indian startups succeeding despite scarce capital exemplified jugaad. Silicon Valley took note—frugal innovation could compete with expensive R&D. Companies like Tata developed $2,500 cars (Nano) through jugaad thinking. The philosophy influenced lean startup methodology.

Criticism and Evolution

Critics argued jugaad could mean shoddy, unsafe solutions—the Tata Nano failed partly due to quality issues. Pure jugaad wasn’t sustainable for scaling businesses. But the concept’s core—innovation under constraints—remained valuable. By 2020, jugaad was recognized globally as Indian contribution to innovation theory.
