The King of Amapiano

Kabza De Small (Kabelo Petrus Motha) is recognized as the “King of Amapiano,” the South African house music subgenre that dominated Southern Africa from 2018-2023 and began globalizing by 2022. His prolific output and innovative production defined the amapiano sound.

## Amapiano Origins & Rise

Amapiano emerged around 2012 in Pretoria’s townships, blending deep house, jazz, and lounge music with uniquely South African log drum percussion and piano melodies. By 2018, it had overtaken gqom as South Africa’s dominant urban sound. Kabza De Small, initially a hip-hop producer, fully embraced amapiano in 2017-2018, releasing dozens of tracks and collaborating extensively with DJ Maphorisa.

The “Scorpion Kings” collaboration series (2019-2020) with DJ Maphorisa became amapiano’s commercial peak: four volumes streaming hundreds of millions of times, establishing Kabza as the genre’s most consistent hitmaker. Tracks like “Sponono,” “Emcimbini,” and “Woza” featuring Cassper Nyovest became nationwide anthems.

## Production Innovation & Work Ethic

Kabza’s reputation stems from relentless productivity: releasing multiple albums per year, producing for virtually every major South African artist, and crafting the “amapiano piano formula”—melodic, jazz-influenced keyboard runs layered over deep basslines and log drums. His studio became amapiano’s epicenter, where emerging vocalists and producers sought his touch for credibility.

By 2023, Kabza had released 15+ albums, produced hundreds of tracks, and appeared on collaborations spanning from Soweto to Lagos to London. His work ethic earned comparisons to Quincy Jones—a producer whose output and influence transcended individual stardom.

## Global Expansion & Challenges

Amapiano began globalizing by 2022: UK club nights, European festivals, and collaborations with international artists (including Chris Brown, Focalistic features gaining UK airplay). Kabza toured Europe and performed at major festivals, introducing amapiano’s hypnotic grooves to new audiences.

However, monetization challenges persisted. Amapiano’s dominance in South Africa didn’t immediately translate to Western streaming economics. Songs with 50-100 million African streams earned less than Western hits with similar numbers due to lower per-stream payouts in African markets. Kabza and peers advocated for better royalty structures from streaming platforms.

Additionally, amapiano faced authenticity debates as international artists adopted the sound. Kabza emphasized respecting the genre’s South African township roots rather than extracting aesthetics for trend-chasing.

By 2023, Kabza De Small remained amapiano’s undisputed king: prolific, innovative, and committed to elevating South African music globally while maintaining its cultural integrity.
