What Is a Karen?
“Karen” is a pejorative slang term for an entitled, middle-aged white woman who demands to speak to the manager, often exhibiting racist, classist, or generally obnoxious behavior. The stereotype includes a specific haircut (asymmetrical bob) and aggressive entitlement.
Origins & Evolution
The name “Karen” was used in a 2005 Dane Cook comedy bit about annoying people, but the modern meme emerged around 2017 on Reddit (r/FuckYouKaren) targeting difficult customers and entitled behavior.
The archetype crystallized in 2018-2020 through viral videos of white women calling police on Black people doing normal activities (BBQ Becky, Permit Patty), harassing service workers, or refusing to wear masks during COVID-19.
Peak During Pandemic
“Karen” exploded in 2020 as COVID-19 heightened confrontations over masks, social distancing, and store policies. Viral videos of “Karens” melting down in stores became a genre. The term entered mainstream media and even sparked debates about misogyny vs. accountability.
Criticism & Staying Power
Some argued “Karen” is sexist or ageist, punishing women for assertiveness. Others defended it as accountability for privileged behavior. The meme remains active as shorthand for entitled customer behavior.
