#KimKSexTape refers to “Kim Kardashian, Superstar,” a sex tape featuring Kim Kardashian and rapper Ray J filmed in 2003 and released by Vivid Entertainment in February 2007. The tape’s release—and the Kardashian family’s response—inadvertently launched one of the most successful celebrity empires in history.

At the time of release, Kim was known primarily as Paris Hilton’s stylist and friend. The tape’s timing—just months before Keeping Up with the Kardashians premiered in October 2007—sparked conspiracy theories that it was a calculated publicity stunt, though Kim has maintained it was released without her consent.

Kim sued Vivid Entertainment and settled for a reported $5 million. But the publicity was invaluable—the scandal made her famous overnight. E! moved forward with the Kardashian family reality show, which became a cultural phenomenon and billion-dollar franchise.

Critics have long debated whether the tape was exploitation or shrewd business. Kim has expressed regret and embarrassment, particularly as a mother. Ray J has given inconsistent accounts about whether release was planned.

Regardless of intent, the tape became the foundation of the Kardashian empire—reality TV, beauty brands (KKW Beauty, Skims), mobile games, and influencer culture dominance. It demonstrated how scandal could be monetized and transformed into mainstream success in the digital age.
