What Was the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge?

The Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge involved teens suctioning their lips inside shot glasses or bottles to create swelling, mimicking Kylie Jenner’s noticeably fuller lips. The trend went viral in April 2015, resulting in injuries and widespread criticism.

Origins & Jenner’s Lips

By 2014-2015, Kylie Jenner’s dramatically plumper lips sparked speculation about cosmetic procedures (she initially denied, later admitted to fillers). Teens wanted to replicate the look without expensive injections.

The DIY “challenge” involved placing a glass over the mouth, sucking air out to create vacuum pressure, holding until lips swelled. Users posted results on Twitter and Instagram, often with bruising and distortion.

Backlash & Dangers

Medical professionals warned of serious risks: bruising, scarring, disfigurement, and long-term damage. Jenner herself discouraged the trend, tweeting “Please don’t” in April 2015.

Media coverage amplified awareness (and likely participation). The trend peaked quickly and died within weeks as horror stories emerged.

Legacy

The challenge became a cautionary tale about celebrity beauty standards influencing dangerous behavior. It also highlighted Jenner’s cultural influence at just 17 years old.
