#MeatDress shocked the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards when Lady Gaga arrived wearing a dress made entirely of raw beef, designed by Franc Fernandez. She wore matching meat shoes, purse, and a meat hat. Gaga later explained the dress as a statement about defending rights: “If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.”
The dress was particularly interpreted as support for LGBT rights (the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was being debated at the time) and opposition to oppression.
PETA criticized the dress, calling it offensive. Gaga, known for outrageous fashion statements (egg entrance, bubble dress, Kermit coat), responded that it was art and political statement, not trivialization.
The dress was preserved through a taxidermy-like process and is displayed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It remains Gaga’s most iconic look and one of fashion history’s most controversial moments.
