The Swedish philosophy of “just the right amount”—not too much, not too little—that followed hygge as 2017’s Nordic lifestyle trend.

Swedish Moderation

Lagom (pronounced “lah-gom”) means “just right,” “moderate,” or “balanced.” It’s Swedish cultural value rejecting extremes—not minimalist or maximalist, not overworking or lazy, not flashy or shabby. Lagom reflects Sweden’s egalitarian culture: don’t stand out, don’t indulge excessively, find balance. The concept applies to everything from work-life balance to home décor to consumption.

Post-Hygge Trend

After hygge’s 2016 success, publishers sought the next Nordic lifestyle trend. Lagom was 2017’s answer. Books like Lagom: The Swedish Art of Living a Balanced, Happy Life promised Swedish wisdom for contentment. Media presented lagom as antidote to excess—perfect for minimalism and sustainability movements. The timing aligned with Marie Kondo’s tidying craze.

Sustainability Connection

Lagom’s “enough” philosophy resonated with environmental consciousness. Buy lagom (enough, not too much), consume lagom, live lagom. Sweden’s eco-friendly reputation made lagom attractive framework for sustainable living. But like hygge, lagom was commodified—“lagom lifestyle products” defeated the concept’s anti-consumerism message. The trend peaked in 2017-2018 then faded.
