The Leica M10, announced January 2017 at $6,595 (body only), was Leica’s flagship digital rangefinder camera, continuing the M-system lineage dating to 1954. The M10 refined the M (Typ 240)‘s formula with a slimmer body (33mm vs. 42mm thick), simpler controls, and improved 24MP CMOS sensor, appealing to purists who valued Leica’s mechanical precision and manual focus philosophy.

Rangefinder Mystique

The M10’s optical rangefinder focusing (no autofocus, no EVF) was anachronistic in 2017 but central to its appeal. Photographers manually focused by aligning split images in the viewfinder — a mechanical experience unchanged since the 1950s. Leica argued this forced intentionality and “slowed down” the photographer.

The M10’s body was machined from solid brass, top plate from aluminum. Build quality was legendary; bodies often lasted decades. The electronic shutter added silent shooting (up to 1/4000s), ideal for street photography.

Lens Ecosystem

M-mount lenses from 1954 onward worked on the M10, giving access to 70+ years of Leica glass. Modern Leica M lenses ($3,000-12,000) delivered exceptional sharpness and rendering. Third-party M-mount lenses (Zeiss, Voigtländer, 7artisans) offered budget options.

The M10’s rangefinder had a 0.73x magnification (0.68x on M-P and M-D variants), ideal for 28-90mm lenses. Wider lenses required external viewfinders.

Street Photography Icon

The M10 became synonymous with street photography — compact, quiet, discrete, with manual controls. Photographers like Magnum members and Instagram influencers (@pauliepockets, @vincestaples shooting film Leicas) perpetuated the mystique.

Variants

Leica released M10-P (2018, quieter shutter, $7,995), M10-D (2018, no LCD screen, $7,995), M10-R (2020, 40MP, $8,295), and M10 Monochrom (2020, black-and-white only, $8,295). By 2023, the M10 remained in production, selling 5,000-10,000 units annually to collectors and purists.
