The 2014 Broadway revival of the Cameron Mackintosh epic musical following the 2012 film adaptation, reimagining the staging while preserving the show’s revolutionary themes and “One Day More” as the most iconic act-one closer in musical theater history.

Do You Hear the People Sing (Again)?

“Les Misérables” returned to Broadway March 23, 2014, after the original production’s 16-year run (1987-2003). The revival featured reimagined staging inspired by Victor Hugo’s paintings - darker, grittier, with rotating platforms and projections replacing the original’s barricade turntable.

The show had maintained global presence through international productions and tours, but the 2012 Tom Hooper film (starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe) introduced “Les Miz” to a generation who’d missed the original Broadway run. Hathaway’s “I Dreamed a Dream” won her an Oscar and became the definitive modern interpretation.

The revival emphasized the musical’s revolutionary politics - particularly relevant during Occupy Wall Street’s aftermath and growing inequality discourse. “Do You Hear the People Sing?” was adopted by Hong Kong democracy protesters (2014), Ukrainian Euromaidan (2014), and other global movements.

The musical’s French Revolution-era story of student uprising, police state, economic desperation, and sacrifice for justice proved timelessly resonant. Critics noted the 2014 revival’s darker staging reflected post-2008 economic pessimism compared to the original’s 1980s optimism.

The revival ran until September 2016 (1,026 performances), proving “Les Miz” remained a commercial draw 30+ years after premiere.
