The Album

Swift wrote The Life of a Showgirl while on the European leg of the Eras Tour, using the album to look back on the previous two years of her life largely spent on the road. The 12-track original closes with its title song, a duet with Sabrina Carpenter — their first official duet after multiple opening-slot tour dates together — and includes “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite.” Max Martin and Shellback, who produced significant portions of Swift’s 1989 and Reputation eras, co-produced the full record.

The Encore (2026)

On September 25, 2026, Swift released The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, a 16-track expanded edition that keeps the original 12 songs intact and adds four new ones: “Patient Zero,” “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon.” The new material was written in Sweden with Martin and Shellback and framed by Swift as a thank-you to fans for the album’s reception. According to industry trackers, the Encore drop was expected to return the album to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for a 13th week.

”Patient Zero” and the 2026 VMAs

The lead single from The Encore, “Patient Zero,” had its music video premiere on September 27, 2026 at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, where Swift was honored with the inaugural Artist Director Honors — presented by Dakota Johnson, the video’s co-star. Directed by Swift with cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki, the video casts Johnson as the wife of an abusive husband played by Colin Farrell, with Swift appearing throughout as the ghost of Farrell’s former, murdered partner. The video’s final sequence reveals that Farrell’s character has been slowly poisoning Johnson, mirroring his treatment of Swift’s character.

Critical Reception

The original album was Swift’s best-selling first-week release of 2025 and anchored her Billboard 200 Year-End win. Critics focused on its production as a Max Martin / Shellback-driven pivot back toward pop-radio craft after the folk-leaning Folklore and Evermore years. The Encore’s four new tracks drew mixed critical response — Bustle flagged “too much” as a recurring note, while the Daily Bruin praised it as a “personal, catchy add” — but did not dent commercial momentum.
