The Life of Pablo — Kanye West’s seventh studio album, released February 14, 2016, after chaotic rollout, the first major streaming-exclusive album (Tidal, later others), a messy gospel-trap masterpiece Kanye kept updating post-release.

The Album

18 tracks of schizophrenic brilliance—gospel choirs, trap beats, vulnerability, misogyny, Ultralight Beams, bleached assholes. Features Rihanna, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, Kid Cudi, Chance the Rapper, Desiigner, and more.

Key tracks: “Ultralight Beam” ft. Chance the Rapper (spiritual opener), “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1” (bleached asshole bar), “Pt. 2” ft. Desiigner, “Famous” ft. Rihanna (Taylor Swift diss, “I made that bitch famous”), “Feedback,” “Waves” ft. Chris Brown, “FML” ft. The Weeknd, “Real Friends,” “Fade,” “Saint Pablo.”

Chart performance: Debuted #1 with 94,000 units (streaming-only, no sales/physicals). Spent 1 week at #1. Later certified 4x Platinum. First streaming-only album to go Platinum.

The Chaos

The rollout was insane:

  • Madison Square Garden Yeezy Season 3 fashion show livestream premiere (Feb 11, 2016, 20M viewers)
  • Title changed from SWISH to Waves to The Life of Pablo last-minute
  • “Which one?” tweet asking which Pablo: Picasso, Escobar, or Apostle Paul
  • Tidal exclusive crashed servers
  • Kanye kept tweaking/updating songs post-release (unprecedented)
  • “Famous” music video (naked wax figures of Taylor, Trump, Rihanna, etc.) controversy

Taylor Swift Feud

“Famous” lyric “I made that bitch famous” reignited the 2009 VMA incident. Taylor’s team denied approval. Kim Kardashian leaked Snapchat phone call (July 2016) proving Taylor approved “that bitch” line—#TaylorSwiftIsOverParty trended #1 globally.

The feud defined 2016 pop culture. Full unedited phone call leaked 2020, vindicating Taylor (she never approved “that bitch”).

Legacy

TLOP was Kanye’s last critically acclaimed album before his MAGA era, mental health crisis, and artistic decline. “Ultralight Beam” is considered one of his greatest songs. The album’s messy, unfinished quality felt authentic.

#TLOP #Ultralight Beam #Famous all trended. The album’s streaming-only model influenced Jay-Z’s 4:44 and others.
