The Serial-Inspired Sci-Fi Mystery
Limetown (July 2015) launched in Serial’s wake, proving fiction podcasts could mimic journalism to create immersive storytelling. The show presented as investigative journalism about Limetown, Tennessee—a neuroscience research facility where 300+ people vanished in 2004. Reporter Lia Haddock’s search for survivors unfolded across six episodes, blending mystery, sci-fi, and paranoia into addictive narrative.
The show’s production quality—documentary-style formatting, found audio, realistic performances—made fiction feel real. Fans theorized online, treating Limetown like real unsolved mystery before acknowledging it was scripted. This “mockumentary podcast” format influenced dozens of shows (The Black Tapes, Tanis, Archive 81), establishing fiction podcasting’s Serial aesthetic.
Facebook Watch adapted Limetown as TV series (2019, Jessica Biel starring), but the show failed to capture podcast’s mystery. Season 2 of the podcast never materialized, leaving fans with unresolved cliffhangers. Limetown demonstrated fiction podcasting’s potential while revealing its challenges: sustaining mystery across seasons, meeting production demands, and translating audio success to visual media rarely worked seamlessly.
