What It Means

Twice-yearly fashion event (February/March, September/October) in London—known for avant-garde designers, emerging talent, and British eccentricity. Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Burberry define UK fashion. Part of “Big Four” fashion weeks.

Origin & Rise

1984 founding: British Fashion Council organized first London Fashion Week at Commonwealth Institute tent. By 1990s, “Cool Britannia” era—Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano launched careers.

Punk heritage: Vivienne Westwood’s rebellious aesthetic (safety pins, tartan, bondage trousers) influenced UK fashion DNA. Unlike Paris/Milan luxury, London = experimental, political, DIY.

Why It Blew Up

McQueen’s theatrics: Alexander McQueen’s shows—models in glass boxes, Shalom Harlow spray-painted by robots (1999), Kate Moss hologram (2006). Tragic suicide (2010) cemented legend.

Burberry’s rebrand: Christopher Bailey (2001-2018) transformed “chav” brand into luxury powerhouse. Riccardo Tisci (2018-2022), Daniel Lee (2022+) continued evolution.

Digital pioneer: 2010: First fashion week live-streaming shows. Burberry’s “see now, buy now” (2016) let consumers buy runway pieces immediately.

Diversity: Edward Enninful (British Vogue editor, 2017+) championed Black models, size inclusivity. #LFWDiversity trended.
