Soca’s International Ambassador

Machel Montano, Trinidad’s soca king (career since 1980s), dominated Caribbean Carnival culture throughout 2010s-2020s while pushing soca’s international boundaries. His 2010s hits—“Like Ah Boss” (2012), “Ministry of Road” (2016), “Famalay” featuring Skinny Fabulous and Bunji Garlin (2019)—won multiple Road March titles (Trinidad Carnival’s highest honor).

Montano’s collaborations with international artists (Ariana Grande, Pitbull, Major Lazer) introduced soca to global audiences. His 2019 Coachella performance was soca’s biggest US platform exposure. By 2023, Montano had 40+ years in music, mentored younger soca artists, and remained Trinidad Carnival’s undisputed king despite emerging competition.

His efforts to globalize soca faced challenges: the genre’s seasonal nature (tied to Caribbean Carnival February-August) limited year-round commercial viability, and streaming economics disadvantaged Caribbean artists. Nonetheless, Montano’s longevity and innovation kept soca relevant across generations.
