Origins

Identified by Dr. Eli Somer in 2002, but not yet in DSM-5. Gained social media traction on Reddit (r/MaladaptiveDreaming) and TikTok around 2016-2018.

Characteristics

  • Extensive daydreaming (hours per day)
  • Vivid, complex fantasies (detailed worlds, characters, storylines)
  • Triggered by stimuli (music, movement, environment)
  • Compulsive (difficulty stopping)
  • Interferes with life (work, relationships, responsibilities)
  • Accompanied by movement (pacing, rocking, gestures)

Not Psychosis

  • People know it’s fantasy (not delusions)
  • Can distinguish reality from daydreams
  • Not hallucinating

Common Themes

  • Alternate self (idealized, powerful)
  • Relationships (romantic, platonic)
  • Adventure/heroism
  • Fame, success
  • Escapism from reality

Causes

Often linked to:

  • Childhood trauma/loneliness
  • ADHD
  • OCD
  • Dissociative disorders
  • Coping mechanism for difficult reality

Impact

Negative:

  • Procrastination
  • Social withdrawal
  • Sleep deprivation (daydreaming instead of sleeping)
  • Shame

Positive (sometimes):

  • Creativity outlet
  • Emotional regulation
  • Comfort

Treatment

  • No official treatment (not recognized diagnosis)
  • CBT techniques
  • Addressing underlying trauma/conditions
  • Limiting triggers (music, isolation)
  • Scheduled daydreaming time
