Origins
Identified by Dr. Eli Somer in 2002, but not yet in DSM-5. Gained social media traction on Reddit (r/MaladaptiveDreaming) and TikTok around 2016-2018.
Characteristics
- Extensive daydreaming (hours per day)
- Vivid, complex fantasies (detailed worlds, characters, storylines)
- Triggered by stimuli (music, movement, environment)
- Compulsive (difficulty stopping)
- Interferes with life (work, relationships, responsibilities)
- Accompanied by movement (pacing, rocking, gestures)
Not Psychosis
- People know it’s fantasy (not delusions)
- Can distinguish reality from daydreams
- Not hallucinating
Common Themes
- Alternate self (idealized, powerful)
- Relationships (romantic, platonic)
- Adventure/heroism
- Fame, success
- Escapism from reality
Causes
Often linked to:
- Childhood trauma/loneliness
- ADHD
- OCD
- Dissociative disorders
- Coping mechanism for difficult reality
Impact
Negative:
- Procrastination
- Social withdrawal
- Sleep deprivation (daydreaming instead of sleeping)
- Shame
Positive (sometimes):
- Creativity outlet
- Emotional regulation
- Comfort
Treatment
- No official treatment (not recognized diagnosis)
- CBT techniques
- Addressing underlying trauma/conditions
- Limiting triggers (music, isolation)
- Scheduled daydreaming time
