Mariupol’s siege from February to May 2022 was one of the war’s bloodiest chapters. The strategic port city was reduced to rubble through constant bombardment. The bombing of a maternity hospital, theater sheltering civilians (with “CHILDREN” written outside), and final stand at Azovstal captured global attention.
The hashtag documented humanitarian catastrophe: 90% of city destroyed, thousands dead, civilians fleeing under fire. Mariupol became synonymous with Russian brutality and urban warfare’s horror. Its fall gave Russia a land bridge to Crimea but at enormous cost.
