Melodic dubstep is a subgenre of dubstep that emphasizes emotional melodies, atmospheric soundscapes, and uplifting chord progressions over aggressive “brostep” bass drops. Pioneered by Seven Lions, Illenium, and MitiS, the genre became a staple of EDM festivals in the 2010s-2020s.
Contrast to Brostep
While 2010s dubstep (Skrillex, Excision) focused on heavy, distorted bass, melodic dubstep blended trance, future bass, and progressive house influences. Tracks featured vocal chops, piano, strings, and euphoric builds followed by powerful but musical drops.
Festival Anthems
Artists like Illenium, Said the Sky, Dabin, and Au5 built massive followings with melodic dubstep. Illenium’s albums Ashes (2016) and Awake (2017) became festival staples, with live performances featuring live instrumentation and vocalists. The genre dominated mainstages at EDC, Tomorrowland, and Lost Lands.
Emotional Connection
Melodic dubstep resonated with fans seeking emotional depth in electronic music. Lyrics often explored heartbreak, mental health, and perseverance. The genre created a community around “feels” and catharsis, contrasting with party-focused EDM.
