What Is Memphis Design?

Memphis Design was an Italian postmodern design movement (1981-1988) featuring bold geometric patterns, clashing colors, plastic laminates, and playful irreverence. Founded by Ettore Sottsass, it rejected minimalist good taste for maximalist chaos.

The 2015+ Revival

2015-2017: Millennial nostalgia for 1980s aesthetics drove Memphis revival; Instagram accounts like @memphismilano hit 200K followers
2018-2020: Graphic designers adopted Memphis patterns for branding; Spotify, Adobe campaigns used Memphis aesthetics
2021-2023: Gen Z embraced anti-minimalism; Memphis became shorthand for “fun, colorful, weird”
