Midnights — Taylor Swift’s 10th studio album, released October 21, 2022, a concept album about 13 sleepless nights across her life, the biggest album of 2022 (1.58M first week) that won Taylor’s record-breaking fourth Grammy Album of the Year.
The Album
Produced by Jack Antonoff and Taylor, Midnights blends synth-pop, electro-pop, and dream pop with introspective lyrics about insomnia-fueled anxiety, revenge, love, and self-loathing. 13 tracks + 7 bonus “3am Edition” tracks (surprise 3am drop).
Key tracks: “Anti-Hero” (4 weeks #1, self-loathing anthem, “It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me,” 10x Platinum), “Lavender Haze,” “Maroon,” “Snow on the Beach” ft. Lana Del Rey, “Midnight Rain,” “Vigilante Shit,” “Bejeweled,” “Mastermind,” “Karma” (Ice Spice remix feat. latter), “You’re On Your Own, Kid.”
Chart performance: Debuted #1 with 1.578 million units (biggest debut since 1989 2014). Entire top 10 of Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously (record). All 20 tracks (13 + 7 bonus) charted (Billboard record for most simultaneous charting songs by artist in one week). Certified 6x Platinum in 6 months.
Grammy History
2024 Grammy Album of the Year — Taylor’s fourth AOTY win, surpassing Frank Sinatra/Stevie Wonder/Paul Simon’s three wins. Most AOTY wins for any artist ever. She announced The Tortured Poets Department during acceptance speech.
The win was controversial—SZA’s SOS was favored by critics. Some accused the Grammys of Taylor favoritism.
Cultural Phenomenon
“Anti-Hero” became 2022-2023’s defining song—TikToks of “It’s me, hi” explosion, therapists using it in sessions, self-deprecation memes. The music video’s fat-suit scene was edited out after backlash.
#MidnightsTaylorSwift #AntiHero #MidnightsEra dominated for months. The Midnights Mayhem with Me TikTok rollout (ping pong balls revealing track titles) was innovative.
The Eras Tour (2023-2024, $2 billion+ gross, highest-grossing tour ever) featured Midnights heavily, cementing its legacy.
