#MoonKnight
Moon Knight, the Disney+ Marvel series starring Oscar Isaac, premiered March 30, 2022, introducing one of Marvel’s most psychologically complex heroes.
The Show
Marc Spector, a mercenary with dissociative identity disorder (DID), shares his body with mild-mannered gift shop employee Steven Grant. After becoming the avatar of Egyptian moon god Khonshu, they navigate a supernatural conspiracy involving ancient deities and Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke), avatar of Ammit.
The six-episode limited series explored mental health, Egyptian mythology, and trauma with darker, more horror-tinged storytelling than typical MCU fare. Isaac’s dual (later triple) performance as Marc, Steven, and Jake Lockley earned widespread acclaim.
Cultural Impact
Episode 5 (“Asylum”) became instant prestige TV, depicting Marc’s traumatic childhood and the origin of his DID in emotionally devastating fashion. The Egyptian representation drew praise for consulting cultural experts.
The series generated memes from Steven’s British accent (“Steven with a V”), Mr. Knight’s outfit, and the chaotic relationship between Marc and Steven. Khonshu’s imposing design and F. Murray Abraham’s voice became iconic.
Despite being marketed as a limited series, fan demand and Isaac’s openness led to speculation about Season 2 or crossover appearances.
Reception
Critics praised the series (86% Rotten Tomatoes), particularly Isaac’s performance and Mohamed Diab’s direction. Audiences connected with the mental health representation, though some felt the six-episode format rushed the ending.
Moon Knight became one of Disney+‘s most-watched Marvel debuts, proving audiences were hungry for MCU stories outside the Avengers formula.
